Murano & Burano Islands

A half-day vaporetto loop out into the Venetian lagoon to the two most photographed islands — Murano for glass, Burano for color.

Getting there

• Vaporetto Line 12 from Fondamente Nove runs to both islands (~40 min to Murano, ~45 min more to Burano)
• A single ticket is €9.50 / 75 min — get a 24-hour pass (€25) if you'll use the boats more than twice

Murano (📍 45.4593, 12.3536)

• Famous for glassblowing since 1291 (Venice moved the furnaces off the main island to prevent fires)
• Free glass factory demos at most workshops — buy something small to support the artisans, or just window-shop the Fondamenta dei Vetrai
• Skip the cheap stalls — most is imported

Burano (📍 45.4853, 12.4180)

• The famous rainbow-painted houses — fishermen reportedly painted them so they could find home in the fog
• Lace-making tradition — visit the Museo del Merletto if you're curious
• Eat risotto di gò (goby fish risotto) at a canal-side trattoria
