Rialto Market

The Mercato di Rialto — Venice's wholesale and retail market since the 11th century. The Pescaria (fish market) sits right on the Grand Canal next to the Rialto Bridge.

Visit notes (July 10)

• Open Mon–Sat, ~7 AM – noon — the fish market is closed Mondays
• Be early — the best fish is gone by 10 AM, and stalls pack up by 1 PM
• Two zones: Erberia (produce) and Pescaria (fish)
• Local move: assemble a picnic from the market — bread, cheese, fruit, prosciutto — and eat it canal-side
• Several bacari (small Venetian wine bars) cluster around the market for cicchetti (small plates) — start there for lunch
